St. Oswald's Church, Hinstock
The nave of the church dates from
1719-1720 and the tower is 17th Century despite appearing to be
later. The South Aisle was built in 1850 to match the nave and
gives the church the appearance of having a double nave.
The organ is of interest being
built by Nicholson's in 1906 with a remote console at the front
of the church and the instrument at the back. This caused a great
deal of trouble, even by the end of it's opening recital only
a third of the organ was working. The builders tried for several
years to rectify the faults but eventually they gave up and, at
their own expense, rebuilt it in 1914. The resulting instrument
is still going strong with its pneumatically operated remote console,
the only drawback of which is a time lag between pressing a key
and the pipe speaking.
